My Sixth week on Vanier is to focus on the school’s curriculum. What do they teach? How they teach it? Hidden curriculum anyone? As far as I know, Vanier does not follow regular school curriculums where you learn math on period one, science period and so on. Instead, Vanier aims to teach disabled students how to “fend for themselves”. Vanier also serves as a “nursing home for disabled children” and uses kindergarten materials. The school’s curriculum offers an alternate route. Students who undergo the program are admitted until their 22 years old. Upon graduation a student is presented with a degree of alternate education. Throughout the years of going to Vanier, students will experience the same daily routines with the exceptions of “swim days” where they get to swim with other schools within the school division. In the morning, they interchange the scheduled between these four classes, Circle time, Liturgy, Feeding, and Cook. I apologize for not having knowledge at the afternoon session because I’m done by noon at Vanier. Vanier curriculum focuses on Faith-based learning and basic communication. As a Catholic school, Vanier is required to integrate Catholicism to the curriculum to ensure its students that faith is not absent in classrooms. Vanier also incorporates basic communication to its curriculum. Why? Most of Vanier’s students are unable to talk. Vanier uses computers, stickers, and cards, and indicators to help the children communicate better. I’ve seen some students frustrated due to their impatience of using the materials necessary of communicating. Also, some students tend to scream out loud every once in a while when what they don’t want. Whenever these students screams and shouts, Vanier implements the same disciplinary action like regular schools. Punishments such as “Time out”, “face the wall” and “In or out” are all implemented at Vanier. I was surprise that disabled kids face the same consequences as regular students. Vanier’s curriculum is not as “strong” compared to regular school divisions but, I personally think that it’s effective and working. I hope that Jean Vanier would continue to operate for a long time.
My Fourth week in Vanier is about observing diversity. Here’s one branch of diversity called Workplace Diversity; refers to the differences that people bring to their jobs on the basis of gender, age, race, ethnicity or professional background. There is not a lot of diversity on Jean Vanier. Almost 100% of Vanier’s teachers are Canadian while out of Vanier’s 17 students, only 11% or two students are non-Canadian. Teachers in Vanier respect one another and disregard one’s gender, race, or sexual orientation. I think when I was doing my internship in Vanier; I was respected and was treated fairly. Why? Because I’m an Immigrant myself. I came from a country called the Philippines. I know some people would raise concerns about special treatment, and frankly, I personally don’t need it. I know my abilities and limitations. Furthermore, being not adept to a lesson, routine, or even a norm only means that there is a lot of room for improvement and learning. If you’re an immigrant like me, ignore the people whose cynical attempts are pathetically pulling you down. The only downside of not having a diverse roster in the teachers of Vanier is the lack of new perspectives. People coming from different parts of the world have different life condition, life styles, and standards of living. Furthermore, they have different standards of education that has a substantial impact on what knowledge they have acquired on their respective country. Schools that focus on special education like Vanier, Diversity is not much of a problem. When handling the students, it’s the same because some of them have the same seizures, and disabilities. If communicating diversely is problem, in Vanier it’s not. 10% of Vanier’s students are the only ones who can communicate by means of speech and most of their students use special communicative devices such as buzzers, stickers, and computers. The two students or the 11% are unable to speak if one would to ask. I personally think that when I was interning at Vanier and experiencing the teacher’s lives added a little diversity in the roster due to my immigrant status. I was exchanging perspectives one time with the principal and found out that we had a huge difference when it comes to disciplinary action and implementation. I was shocked how our perspectives differ from one another and I think with that difference adds variety to the working environment that could bring a substantial change to student-teacher development. As for students diverse, I think it creates a competitive atmosphere that gives opportunity for everyone to improve and to reassess their skills as students.
For me my second week at Vanier was more interesting than my first week. This week, I got to work with teachers on room AE-8. Room AE-8 is a room for students ranging from 5-10 years old. The teacher ages where ranging from 23-50(assuming), and all of them are well-trained and well organized in what they do. As a school for special needs, Vanier functions more like a nursing home for students so some of them have medical experience and not considered teachers. However, ¾ of the staff at Vanier have education degrees and also have medical experience ranging from basic to advance semi-nursing aide experience. The teachers functions as “guide by the side” due to most students’ disabilities that prevents them from learning and functioning as “students”. Vanier’s teacher’s adjust and re-evaluates the situation to cope up with the challenges that their students have to improve their service to the students. The Life of a teacher in Vanier is more like a nurse or a caring mother. The hidden curriculum in the Vanier is Altruism. The hidden curriculum of the school was something that I notice when I started getting my hands on the field of their work as teacher/nursing-aides. I personally think that they were not directly instructed to care, and what I sensed in those teachers were warmth, love, and care. It completely threw me out of balance because this was a very life-changing perspective where my “philosophy of education” falls pale in comparison to the resolve that these teachers have. I don’t even see the difference between the teachers and the nursing-aides anymore due to the hidden curriculum. “What are my teachers like in my school?” The role, responsibilities, function, and behaviour of the teacher are completely different because Vanier is not your typical school. Teaching is less implicated in this school because their students’ learning disabilities instead, Teachers focus more on the well being of the students where they are taken care of properly. Furthermore, the teachers use basic teaching such as communication, arts and crafts, cooking, and storytelling which I would say to be very effective due to disabilities of the children.
These days have been very tough on me due the unending homework that I have been having lately. I was like, nope, I’m gonna play Assassin’s Creed and “chilloot” for a while hahaha. What I found out was playing 6 hours straight can actually give strains to your eyes, mind, and body. I’m a gamer and I was always use to be exposed to video games for long period but that was years ago. Why? because Video games have evolve from sparingly awful graphics to high definition 3d game play and the expectations are very very high especially from the hit games such as Call of Duty, God of War, and Final Fantasy. I’m finally putting the hardest challenges that happen to me during the duration of this learning project.
The difficulties that I have experience was my Internet connection. If you’re internet connection sucks, don’t even attempt to play this game online, because lag issues will emerge all over the place and ruin your gameplay. Also, it will disconnect very often due to the technical difficulties that are presents in the game.
Another difficulty, was group isolation. this means that you can’t switch teams once a team of four formed a group. they will own and kill you every time, They will stun you repeated and escape most of your chase sequences, and they will rack up the most point and make you lose.
Lastly, The Final difficulty that I had was the trash talking in the lobbies. I don’t personally talk shit on my the lobbies and games but I shout when I win and what I find humiliating is that a lot of people talk shit at you with your proper consent and reason. I dislike people who do that and proclaim themselves as bona fide “professional” players when they’re not.
Well, I over did it 27 hours and still counting ’cause I still have to finish the campaign mode and rock at it due to the experience I earned from multiplayer mode but, until then, You just have to wait lol. Peace out! for now that is lol
After all of these weeks, after all the struggles and the pain that I have suffered from university’s relentless assaults. I, Edgar Allan Dela Cruz will survive my first semester. English 100 is one of the toughest challenges that I have faced ever since challenging the valedictorian of my class to an argument about “knowledge versus money” in which I lost. The question is why did I bring up this story? I never engage without purpose so, this is why. The title of valedictorian is awarded to the person with the highest grade point average. Also, valedictorians are respected and whom most people depend on when it comes to group activities and brain storming. Like the valedictorian, for me, English 100 has demands that I could never possibly meet. Furthermore, it is very structured and has several branches of almost unlimited supply of content. They come in different shapes and sizes. They could go from poems to essays and from paragraphs to journals. Why am I saying this? It is because I envy people who were born with natural talent on academics. These people can easily decipher poems and literary pieces like Robert Francis’ “The Pitcher” in a matter of minutes while it seemed barely understandable to people like me without that natural talent. Why can we just be equal? “Ten thousand hours” says Malcolm Gladwell, a phrase that I have been hearing from various professors at the U of R ever since the beginning of class. I had a similar motto of defeating gene via perseverance. However, I started to doubt my motto when I pushed myself to my limits and realized that I was not even close to the level and grandeur of that valedictorian. Overwhelming would be the proper word to describe this phenomenon as well as this English 100 class wouldn’t it? I am weary of the journey of life. I am baffled, confused, and alone in the land of uncharted snow. Does hope and altruism exist? If so, who has it? Why it is only bestowed to the hands of famous, intelligent, and the undeserving? Though my futile attempts to survive this course devour my strength and distort my well-being, I do not plan on giving up. Listen: Being sick does not help either. However, for reasons unknown, my cognitively is not is not the same as before. I do not why this cognitive deterioration is happening to me. I made a gamble and placed my credibility on the line. (My head hurts). It’s not over yet English 100. I will put the last bit of my strength into passing this class before God knows what happens. English 100, you are tough to finish, and seemingly impossible to finish especially to a schmuck like but, let me tell you this: I will not letting you succeed into dragging me into the abyss.
That was some rant that I made and I apologize. However I think it had to be done and I feel a lot better know. Being sick distorts my thinking and reason. Since we are on the topic of poems, I decided to share one of mine for non-academic reason and some feedback I guess.

I never actually played the previous two games of Assassin’s Creed which led me to wonder what happened before this game even came.
Here are two summaries that I found to bridge the gaps of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood:
Desmond is a bartender that is kidnapped by a powerful corporation called Abstergo. After being explained to that he can use a machine called the Animus to relive his ancestors memories he agrees to cooperate with Abstergo.
Altair, his ancestor, is a disgraced assassin because he broke the three tenets of the assassins. In order to regain his former status he must hunt down nine key targets. Altair reluctantly agrees and his slowly hunts down the men he realizes they all have something in common. After assassinating all nine targets and discovering that his ninth target was in fact a trap, Altaïr confronts Robert in front of King Richard I of England, leader of the Crusader army. Altaïr informs Richard that Robert is plotting to betray and kill him, which causes him to encourage a duel to the death between Altaïr and Robert. Richard then believes Altaïr. Upon dying, Robert confesses to Altaïr that they were not nine, but ten Templars conspiring to take the Piece of Eden. The tenth being Al Mualim, who wanted to keep the Piece of Eden for himself and therefore sent out Altaïr to kill the others. Back at the Fortress, where Al Mualim had taken over the minds of the people inside, Altaïr manages to defeat and kill him in a duel. The memory Abstergo was searching for, which located the Piece of Eden, reveals it is only just one of 28 that are scattered across the world.
Back in 2012, Abstergo sends a team to recover as many Pieces as possible. Deciding they do not need him any more, they give orders to kill Desmond. Lucy Stillman, an Abstergo employee who revealed to Desmond that she is an undercover Assassin, convinces them not to kill Desmond until they recover the Pieces, buying him time. Desmond is left alone in the Animus room, and by the use of Altaïr’s Eagle Vision inherited from the ‘bleeding effect’ caused by the Animus, he sees many symbols drawn in blood on the wall in his room and on the floors of the lab. These symbols contain references to the end of the world in many different languages.
Assassin’s Creed II
Lucy returns and breaks Desmond out of Abstergo. He is brought to a hideout and introduced to her Assassin allies Shaun and Rebecca, as well as an updated version of the Animus. Knowing what is at stake, Desmond volunteers to enter the Animus again, and explore the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young nobleman from 1476 in Florence, Republic of Florence. He hopes to gain Ezio’s abilities through the Bleeding Effect so he can aid the Assassins.
Ezio’s father and brothers are executed by the hand of Uberto Alberti, a corrupt official in league with the Templars. Ezio kills Uberto in revenge, and after fleeing with his mother and sister to their villa in the Tuscan countryside, he learns of his Assassin heritage and begins training under his uncle Mario. Ezio also befriends local inventor Leonardo da Vinci, who helps Ezio with his work by decoding an encrypted codex that contains Altaïr’s memoirs, as well as plans for advanced assassin weaponry. As Ezio looks at them with Eagle Vision, the thirty codex pages come together to form a hidden map of the vaults across the world. Over the course of a decade Ezio assassinates the conspirators involved in his father’s death, leaving Rodrigo Borgia, a nobleman and Templar who has retrieved the Apple of Eden and is the center of the conspiracy. Ezio and other Assassins reclaim the Apple of Eden, but Borgia flees. Ezio is formally inducted as an Assassin, and is told that he may be a prophet as described in the codex.
During the course of the game Desmond experiences a number of unusual occurrences. First he discovers strange glyphs apparently left by a previous test subject (Who died because the Abstergo staff left him in the Animus for too long), similar to the symbols seen at Abstergo, which hide a secret history of the world. He later dreams of appearing as Altaïr again, chasing after Maria, a Templar he had earlier spared, and then romanced her. Finally, several memories are skipped, throwing the timeline forward by more than a decade to the Vatican, where Borgia now resides as Pope Alexander VI. The “skipped” memories are available as downloadable content, and deal with the Battle of Forlì and the Bonfire of the Vanities.
Borgia is now the Pope and has in his possession the Papal Staff, another Piece of Eden. He attempts to use it to enter a vault that the prophet as described in the codex must enter. Ezio intercepts Borgia, but spares his life, and enters the vault himself. He encounters the hologram of a woman, who claims to be once known as Minerva, and who also claims to come from a civilization whose members were also seen in the same light by ancient peoples. Minerva tells of a great disaster that had befallen and destroyed her civilization, and warns that it will occur again soon. Talking directly to Desmond, she tells him “The rest is up to you,” leaving Ezio extremely confused.
Desmond is pulled out of the Animus as Abstergo has located their hideout. He, Lucy and the rest of the team manage to flee to safety, and soon prepare to return Desmond to the Animus to search for clues that may help them.
