Shadowing Someone Episode 6 “The Schools Curriculum”

My Sixth week on Vanier is to focus on the school’s curriculum. What do they teach? How they teach it? Hidden curriculum anyone? As far as I know, Vanier does not follow regular school curriculums where you learn math on period one, science period and so on. Instead, Vanier aims to teach disabled students how to “fend for themselves”. Vanier also serves as a “nursing home for disabled children” and uses kindergarten materials. The school’s curriculum offers an alternate route. Students who undergo the program are admitted until their 22 years old. Upon graduation a student is presented with a degree of alternate education. Throughout the years of going to Vanier, students will experience the same daily routines with the exceptions of “swim days” where they get to swim with other schools within the school division. In the morning, they interchange the scheduled between these four classes, Circle time, Liturgy, Feeding, and Cook. I apologize for not having knowledge at the afternoon session because I’m done by noon at Vanier. Vanier curriculum focuses on Faith-based learning and basic communication. As a Catholic school, Vanier is required to integrate Catholicism to the curriculum to ensure its students that faith is not absent in classrooms. Vanier also incorporates basic communication to its curriculum. Why? Most of Vanier’s students are unable to talk. Vanier uses computers, stickers, and cards, and indicators to help the children communicate better. I’ve seen some students frustrated due to their impatience of using the materials necessary of communicating. Also, some students tend to scream out loud every once in a while when what they don’t want. Whenever these students screams and shouts, Vanier implements the same disciplinary action like regular schools. Punishments such as “Time out”, “face the wall” and “In or out” are all implemented at Vanier. I was surprise that disabled kids face the same consequences as regular students. Vanier’s curriculum is not as “strong” compared to regular school divisions but, I personally think that it’s effective and working.  I hope that Jean Vanier would continue to operate for a long time.

Shadowing Someone Episode 4 “Observing Diversity”

Image Detail

My Fourth week in Vanier is about observing diversity. Here’s one branch of diversity called Workplace Diversity; refers to the differences that people bring to their jobs on the basis of gender, age, race, ethnicity or professional background. There is not a lot of diversity on Jean Vanier.  Almost 100% of Vanier’s teachers are Canadian while out of Vanier’s 17 students, only 11% or two students are non-Canadian. Teachers in Vanier respect one another and disregard one’s gender, race, or sexual orientation. I think when I was doing my internship in Vanier; I was respected and was treated fairly. Why? Because I’m an Immigrant myself. I came from a country called the Philippines. I know some people would raise concerns about special treatment, and frankly, I personally don’t need it. I know my abilities and limitations. Furthermore, being not adept to a lesson, routine, or even a norm only means that there is a lot of room for improvement and learning. If you’re an immigrant like me, ignore the people whose cynical attempts are pathetically pulling you down. The only downside of not having a diverse roster in the teachers of Vanier is the lack of new perspectives. People coming from different parts of the world have different life condition, life styles, and standards of living. Furthermore, they have different standards of education that has a substantial impact on what knowledge they have acquired on their respective country. Schools that focus on special education like Vanier, Diversity is not much of a problem. When handling the students, it’s the same because some of them have the same seizures, and disabilities. If communicating diversely is problem, in Vanier it’s not. 10% of Vanier’s students are the only ones who can communicate by means of speech and most of their students use special communicative devices such as buzzers, stickers, and computers. The two students or the 11% are unable to speak if one would to ask. I personally think that when I was interning at Vanier and experiencing the teacher’s lives added a little diversity in the roster due to my immigrant status. I was exchanging perspectives one time with the principal and found out that we had a huge difference when it comes to disciplinary action and implementation. I was shocked how our perspectives differ from one another and I think with that difference adds variety to the working environment that could bring a substantial change to student-teacher development. As for students diverse, I think it creates a competitive atmosphere that gives opportunity for everyone to improve and to reassess their skills as students.

What about something Random? “A change of post”

This is a lot of random stuff that I totally forgot what they are. if some can remind me, that would b awesome!

Poetry Time #1
SEP 27
Posted by Edgar Allan Dela Cruz
“Nyan Nyan” says the cat! hmmm…I’m quite bored doing all this work and studying. Then, I was like: ha! I should share a poem.

This is my English B30 poetry assignment about describing someone that I know. I chose my Math teacher due to his passion for teaching and dedication to make his students learn. It turned to be great! my English teacher loved it and so did my Math teacher. Enjoy!

Mr. Blanke

A man of knowledge and power
The best Math teacher-The Man of the Hour
Confident, Passionate, and Bold
His jokes and antics; never gets old

He is bald, wears glasses, and has intense eyes
Wherever I am in his class, my mind never reaches the skies
His voice is like thunder
Strong and powerful like the Boy Wonder

His Philosophy is a warzone
Fight hard, do well, and you are all alone
With him, Math is exciting
Everyone is listening, and no one is murmuring.

But who is he outside class?; the inner
A family man-A True Winner
He loves his kids and has a trophy wife
Farms with passion-a beautiful life

He loves pimping his sprayer; cranking here, whacking that
Humming and whistling with his John Deere hat.
This is Mr. Blanke: He is Awesome! That’s a fact!

Tech Task #1 Remastered for Tech Tasks
SEP 22
Posted by Edgar Allan Dela Cruz
Edgar Allan Dela Cruz is a Mathematics Education Major Student in the University of Regina. I hold two High School Diplomas from Proverbsville School Incorporated in the Philippines, and from the Swift Current Comprehensive High School in Canada.

Since early 2007 I’ve been interested in acquiring a wide database of all fields of knowledge which lead me into going to Nursing as a career choice. However, throughout my senior year (2007-2008) of high school in the Philippines, I realized that Nursing was not in the best of my interest. This was because that the quality of education for nursing was rapidly diminishing due to high demands overseas and the amount of students taking the course.

On July 2009, my family migrated to Canada and landed in a small city called Swift Current to attain higher standards of education, a better standard of living, and to see a different perspective of world. Here, I met the Mcleans, Mr. Greg Mclean, a Band Director and Mrs. Marcia Mclean, a Choral Director, whom their passion for teaching music has inspired to choose Education as a career choice. My affinity was in mathematics, so it was not very hard to decide.

During my two years of stay in Canada, I realized that I have passion for two things, Drama and Music.

As an Actor, I joined drama productions in the Swift Current Comprehensive high school which includes: Becoming Juliet, All that twitters is not Gold, Treasure Island, Competition Piece, and The Omnipotence and the Wheelbarrow Man.

As a Singer, I joined the SCCHS Meistersingers, and the Swift Current Oratorio Choir. I was fortunate enough to have Marcia Mclean as a private vocal coach in which my vocal technique has improved from nothing into something. I also fortunate to be 2011’s recipient of the Jean Cyca Music Theatre Award for singing “I Only Want To Say” from Jesus Christ Superstar at the Swift Current Music Festival which also gave me recommendation to participate to the Provincial Music Festival.

Above anything else is my family. I am the eldest of 4 children. My father, Edgardo is a Mechanic, and my mother, Cynthia works at nursing homes. I develop a strong interest in performing. I perform in plays, sing in choirs, and compete in music festivals to gain experience that would be useful in the near future. Other than Drama and Music, I also have passions for poetry, dancing, anime, and my faith. My growth as a person has dramatically increased as a result of hard work, perseverance, and overcoming various trials to achieve success. I will never forget my mentor, Marcia Mclean said to me: “I want it, I make it happen”.

What makes you go to Fleep?
SEP 21
Posted by Edgar Allan Dela Cruz
What makes you go to sleep? pills? tea? stress? Me, I have another problem. Sleeping in a very small apartment can be very hard when you have 3 younger sisters trying to make a music career out of YouTube videos and Pop music recordings, Not to mention the amount of screaming and shouting that they create with said activities. Well, stress can be cured by R&R, but sleep can’t recovered very easily. good night!

A good way to Relax -not really lol
SEP 20
Posted by Edgar Allan Dela Cruz
Yeah I’m kinda geeky when it comes to video games. This card would be very useful to track down my 50 hour challenge. Also this is also a good way to shake away all the university pressure that I have been having lately, but now ’cause I still have a lot to do. Phew, I think I ‘m getting used to this blogging business.

Crippled by Calculus
SEP 20
Posted by Edgar Allan Dela Cruz
I know a lot of you guys have taken calculus in high school, which in turn is giving you a good advantage at Math 110, but for me, I am actually having a hard time following the professor’s lectures. I was given a deadline on three semesters to finish high school due to the fact that my high school diploma is not recognized here in Canada. That’s why I ran out of time and only finished three Math Classes. This Math 110 class is a tough, and therefore I must act in all due haste before my assignment deadline is almost up which is 9 days from now. I’m crippled by this class and I think I should call someone that I could help.

A 30 minute Presentation on January 13, 2011 – “The whole thang in paper”

Image Detail

Whenever I write presentations, I always never look at the clock and care, so I decided to post this because This essay gave me a strong example that prepared me for my Biology project which I produced 135 slides which was 2o minutes worth. I guess I got to cut off a lot of minutes on the next one lol!

Do you play Video games? In this world two consoles battle for gaming supremacy mainly the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. In the next few minutes I will talk about the Pros and Cons about and tell which console is the best for you.

First off is designed. Both consoles are bringing their slim and slick stream designs. The Xbox 360 is slicker, slimmer, and improved in every way over the original Xbox 360. I like the glossy piano black finish and new and edgy style but you still have that sizable Ac adaptor. While the Ps3 slim is the slicker of the two and is more travel friendly but its matte plastic   finish takes away some of the “sexy” and its resembles a  George Forman grill and it feels more generic compared to the new Xbox slim. Sometimes, makeovers can really make a difference on which console you want to buy.

Second, is all about Features. The Standard Xbox 360 Slim holds a larger 250 GB hard drive and finally brings built in Wi-fi. You will get HDMI and Wireless controls but its Proprietary hard drive makes it a head-scratcher. No the main difference of this two consoles is blu-ray. The Ps3 slim had been rated one of CNET’s blu-ray players and it’s now a real advantage. Plus you have a user-replaceable hard drive. Its 160 Gb (standard Ps3) hard drive gives you a little less storage, it has built-in Wi-fi, HDMI, and has Bluetooth capability allows you to connect many third party accessories including almost any Bluetooth headset. Plus, the system is already 3D ready for movies and games through software updates.

Third, is Online Services . Microsoft’s Xbox Live is the Gold standard of online gaming. It’s going to cost you $50 dollars per/year but, its ease of use, the size of the community, and access to integrated service like Netflix, Last Fm, Facebook, Twitter, and more makes it a total package. Sony’s Playstation Network is absolutely free and you really have to give them credit for that but its not as nearly as developed, inviting friends to game is not very elegant. Playstation Plus is just a service for additional gaming content, but it has yet to add any online features that enhance the PSN.

Fourth, is Media Playback. The Xbox 360 can play mp3, it has an extensive media support for videos and you get access to twitter, and Facebook via Xbox Live. But, you can’t surf the web because it does not have a web browser. The most annoying feature in Xbox 360’s media playback is that its only capable of processing DVD-Format Dics in regards to games and videos. While the PS3 has mp3, an extensive media support, you can record videos via playstation eye, chat up to six people simultaneously via playstation eye, access the web with its own internet browser, and  ”Illegally” download video content online. And it has Blu-ray. What’s the difference between Blu-ray and dvd, simple. Blu-ray can carry more storage than Dvd. This is really cripples the Xbox 360 because the Ps3 has established the standard of High- Definition gaming.

Fifth is Multiplatform games.

Note:  Demo game is Gta 4 for both consoles

Sixth is all about Exclusives. Both consoles are packed with franchised titles which each side wishes they could have. The Xbox 360 can brag the bloody battlefields of Gears of War, The unlimited adventure that is Fable, and the world of Halo and master chief but its lost some of its momentum. The arguably boast a stronger and a more diverse exclusive library with their modern day Indiana Jones Uncharted Series, God of war’s epic story and scale, Little big planet’s creative community, Heavy Rain’s unique control system and so many more. When it comes to Downloadable games the Xbox Live Arcade has a much deeper and diverse library games from the past and it continuously release awesome exclusives like limbo. The Playstation Network isn’t on the same level with its downloadable game library but it can still hold its own. There are standouts like Fat princess and Flower but there just aren’t enough of them. You can play most of your old Xbox titles on the Xbox slim but, the backwards compatibility of the PS3 slim is nonexistent.

Note: Halo for Xbox 360 and Heavy Rain for the Ps3

Seventh is the Failures Number 3 failure of the ps3

Ps3                                                                Xbox 360

Online Communication                                                 Online Gaming Not Free

Game Installs                                                              Limitation of Dvd-Format

No Custom Music Tracks                                                 Red Ring of Death/Red Eye

Eight is all about Value. We love the fact that the Slim 360 stayed at the same price point, but it’s also the same price as the PS3, which offers a Blu-ray player. This additional feature is what it all comes down to, and the 360 doesn’t offer it. Plus, Xbox Live still costs $50 per year, and there are more accessories to buy for a 360 than a PS3.

After this dead-heated battle of impartial comparisons between two consoles, I just want to say that I love gaming. Whether you are with the Ps3 Fanboys or Xbox 360 Fanboys, it really does not matter because we are all gamers. I personally recommend getting both systems. Superior Online services for the Xbox 360 and Superior Media Performance of the PS3. But, after all this recommendations, there can be one console that is more superior and that is the Playstation 3. For the past year the PS3 has proven to it potential and the graphics have finally started to live up with the expectations like uncharted 2 and God of war 3. Ps3 the Ps3 also help Blu-ray disk as the sole High-definition disk media. Neither systems are perfect so, if you really plan on getting a console, get the one where your friends are at because you can’t really go wrong with any of them.

Shadowing Someone Episode 2: “The Teachers”

For me my second week at Vanier was more interesting than my first week. This week, I got to work with teachers on room AE-8. Room AE-8 is a room for students ranging from 5-10 years old. The teacher ages where ranging from 23-50(assuming), and all of them are well-trained and well organized in what they do. As a school for special needs, Vanier functions more like a nursing home for students so some of them have medical experience and not considered teachers. However, ¾ of the staff at Vanier have education degrees and also have medical experience ranging from basic to advance semi-nursing aide experience. The teachers functions as “guide by the side” due to most students’ disabilities that prevents them from learning and functioning as “students”. Vanier’s teacher’s adjust and re-evaluates the situation to cope up with the challenges that their students have to improve their service to the students. The Life of a teacher in Vanier is more like a nurse or a caring mother. The hidden curriculum in the Vanier is Altruism. The hidden curriculum of the school was something that I notice when I started getting my hands on the field of their work as teacher/nursing-aides. I personally think that they were not directly instructed to care, and what I sensed in those teachers were warmth, love, and care. It completely threw me out of balance because this was a very life-changing perspective where my “philosophy of education” falls pale in comparison to the resolve that these teachers have. I don’t even see the difference between the teachers and the nursing-aides anymore due to the hidden curriculum. “What are my teachers like in my school?” The role, responsibilities, function, and behaviour of the teacher are completely different because Vanier is not your typical school. Teaching is less implicated in this school because their students’ learning disabilities instead, Teachers focus more on the well being of the students where they are taken care of properly. Furthermore, the teachers use basic teaching such as communication, arts and crafts, cooking, and storytelling which I would say to be very effective due to disabilities of the children.

Learning Project Linker #6: Bashing Through Online….Again? Hours Spent 6 Hours

Image Detail

These days have been very tough on me due the unending homework that I have been having lately. I was like, nope, I’m gonna play Assassin’s Creed and “chilloot” for a while hahaha. What I found out was playing 6 hours straight can actually give strains to your eyes, mind, and body. I’m a gamer and I was always use to be exposed to video games for long period but that was years ago. Why? because Video games have evolve from sparingly awful graphics to high definition 3d game play and the expectations are very very high especially from the hit games such as Call of Duty, God of War, and Final Fantasy. I’m finally putting the hardest challenges that happen to me during the duration of this learning project.

The difficulties that I have experience was my Internet connection. If you’re internet connection sucks, don’t even attempt to play this game online, because lag issues will emerge all over the place and ruin your gameplay. Also, it will disconnect very often due to the technical difficulties that are presents in the game.

Another difficulty, was group isolation. this means that you can’t switch teams once a team of four formed a group. they will own and kill you every time, They will stun you repeated and escape most of your chase sequences, and they will rack up the most point and make you lose.

Lastly, The Final difficulty that I had was the trash talking in the lobbies. I don’t personally talk shit on my the lobbies and games but I shout when I win and what I find humiliating is that a lot of people talk shit at you with your proper consent  and reason. I dislike people who do that and proclaim themselves as bona fide “professional” players when they’re not.

Well, I over did it 27 hours and still counting ’cause I still have to finish the campaign mode and rock at it due to the experience I earned from multiplayer mode but, until then, You just have to wait lol. Peace out! for now that is lol

Online Gamer Identity

Last we on Ecmp355 we were talking about Digital Citizenship. I have already made my Online Identity for tech task and I just want to ad my Gaming ID. I play a PS3 and this is my Gamer ID. Feel free for you guys to comment and ask questions. Edgar_Allan

English 100 Journal #3

After all of these weeks, after all the struggles and the pain that I have suffered from university’s relentless assaults. I, Edgar Allan Dela Cruz will survive my first semester. English 100 is one of the toughest challenges that I have faced ever since challenging the valedictorian of my class to an argument about “knowledge versus money” in which I lost. The question is why did I bring up this story? I never engage without purpose so, this is why. The title of valedictorian is awarded to the person with the highest grade point average. Also, valedictorians are respected and whom most people depend on when it comes to group activities and brain storming. Like the valedictorian, for me, English 100 has demands that I could never possibly meet. Furthermore, it is very structured and has several branches of almost unlimited supply of content. They come in different shapes and sizes. They could go from poems to essays and from paragraphs to journals. Why am I saying this? It is because I envy people who were born with natural talent on academics. These people can easily decipher poems and literary pieces like Robert Francis’ “The Pitcher” in a matter of minutes while it seemed barely understandable to people like me without that natural talent. Why can we just be equal? “Ten thousand hours” says Malcolm Gladwell, a phrase that I have been hearing from various professors at the U of R ever since the beginning of class. I had a similar motto of defeating gene via perseverance. However, I started to doubt my motto when I pushed myself to my limits and realized that I was not even close to the level and grandeur of that valedictorian. Overwhelming would be the proper word to describe this phenomenon as well as this English 100 class wouldn’t it?  I am weary of the journey of life. I am baffled, confused, and alone in the land of uncharted snow. Does hope and altruism exist? If so, who has it? Why it is only bestowed to the hands of famous, intelligent, and the undeserving? Though my futile attempts to survive this course devour my strength and distort my well-being, I do not plan on giving up. Listen: Being sick does not help either. However, for reasons unknown, my cognitively is not is not the same as before. I do not why this cognitive deterioration is happening to me. I made a gamble and placed my credibility on the line. (My head hurts). It’s not over yet English 100. I will put the last bit of my strength into passing this class before God knows what happens. English 100, you are tough to finish, and seemingly impossible to finish especially to a schmuck like but, let me tell you this: I will not letting you succeed into dragging me into the abyss.

Bonus Content:

Dear Professor,

That was some rant that I made and I apologize. However I think it had to be done and I feel a lot better know. Being sick distorts my thinking and reason. Since we are on the topic of poems, I decided to share one of mine for non-academic reason and some feedback I guess.

Sincerely Yours

Edgar Allan Dela Cruz

The Moon

Soundless, lifeless, and heartless

Consumed by darkness, a land of no caress.

Desolated with lies, devoured by Melancholy

Visited by observers, a vessel full of folly

Windless, depressing, clueless

Populated by craters, all faceless.

A place of overwhelming drought

A realm of unforgiving doubt

Beauty as it may from far away

A demented version of the milky way

Supressing day and offering night

The phenomena of an eclipse, the dark light

The Moon, the parsimonious moon

The pretentious shade, a silent typhoon

Assasssin’s Creed: Revelations has received generally favorable reviews, with a score of 81% and 80% on Metacritic for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 respectively.Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced during an earnings call on November 8, 2011, that pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed: Revelations were “significantly higher” than figures for Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, yet the firm is still expecting a “double digit decline” in sales for Revelations compared to the other title.

IGN gave the game a rating of 8.5 out of 10, stating “This is the best Assassin’s Creed yet, even if that victory is claimed by an inch and not a mile. If you’ve been following the lives of Altair and Ezio this long, you owe it to yourself to see their last adventure.” 1UP gave the game a rating of B+, stating “While Revelationslacks that one supreme improvement or standout mechanic that defined AC2 and Brotherhood each, it’s still a damn fine sendoff for Altair and Ezio.”

Edge gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, saying that “unlike the elegant lead, who’s grey-haired but unbowed by the end of the adventure, Assassin’s Creed has been quietly compromised by age.” Eurogamer also gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, writing “where Brotherhood enhanced the thrill of being Ezio Auditore,Revelations distracts from it. Ezio may look old, but it’s the series itself that really shows its age.”

VideoGamer gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, stating “So, for the first time, a new Assassin’s Creed game is worse than its predecessor, the first time the short development period has had a noticeable impact on the game’s quality. It’s a game of nearlies and might-have-beens: summed up by the hookblade, a supposedly key new feature which in practice merely extends Ezio’s reach slightly, and allows him to glide down the occasional zipline.” GamePro also gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, saying that “at its core, this is the Assassin’s Creed we’ve grown to love in recent years, and it still serves as a pretty good time sink — plus, it’s a necessary bridge to next year’s already-announced follow-up. But obligation shouldn’t be the primary reason to play something, and sadly, that’s too often the case in this humdrum campaign.”

Game Informer gave the game a rating of 8.8 out of 10, writing “a number of new features have been attempted to make Revelations feel new and different from its predecessors. In that quest for broader variety and a unique identity from the earlier games, Revelations makes some missteps that are hard to ignore. However, the game offers more of what has been great about the franchise, and that should be enough to bring most fans to the table, even if it a poor starting point for new players.”GameTrailers also gave the game a rating of 8.8 out of 10, writing that “the engine is a bit long in the tooth and some of the content isn’t entirely worth exploring, but if you’re looking for an unforgettable top shelf action/adventure, heed the creed.”

Official Xbox Magazine gave the game a rating of 8.5 out of 10, stating “What’s available here remains as ridiculously appealing as ever. It’s still a thrill unique to the series to be perched six stories high, looking out across miles of meticulously rendered game world – even if that dazzling, danger-filled world has grown overly familiar, having traded what was once revolution for iterative evolution.” PlayStation Official Magazine (UK) gave the game a rating of 9 out of 10, stating “As a conclusion for Ezio’s chapter, Revelations proves an utterly brilliant swansong.”

If you’re a fan of the game, You will probably love this game. If not, don’t even bother buying it.

But enough of that. I just gave you some hints and winks on Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

Time for the real Fish!

I wrote this email 4 days ago. 1 day after the release of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and 1 day after the Game Stop employees told me that they “ran out” of the Ultimate Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations which was reserved to me.

To whom it may concern,
I moved my pre-order from the Assassin’s Creed Revelations Signature Edition to the Assassin’s Creed Revelations Ultimate Edition for 79.99 at the northgate mall in Regina on October 19 1:50 pm to an employee namely Travis almost 13 hours after Arkham City’s midnight launch and when the employees of GameStop at Rochdale Regina found out of the Assassins Creed Revelations Ultimate Edition on their system. November 15, 2011, the day that Assassin’s Creed Revelations was released, I went to Northgate mall to pick it up but, They told me that they ”ran out” of the Ultimate edition and there was an ”error” that was made by the employee who moved it in the first place. They offered me the regular edition but I refused to accept because I have been waiting for this game a long time. They told me to move the money to some other game and I had no choice but to move it because they said no when I wanted to move the money to an Eb games card. I would would like to request a solution to this problem.

To double check, I called the Gamestop hotline and explained the situation to them. They told me that the District Manager will call me in a matter of 1-3 Business Days to rectify the situation. Its’ already been 3 days and not phone calls nor texts. I am starting to put my doubts on this Fiasco that has been deliberately wasting my time. I don’t want to be unfair but an error is not an excuse that will suffice this problem. 12:07 am Novermber 20, 2011. I humbly wait for this problem to be solve. Well 80 bucks and its very hard to get refunds especially if you traded games to them.  I actually doubt that I would even get my Ultimate Edition and start playing and catching with the Professional League. Oh well. However, These employees can be greedy sometimes and deny your claims and lie in front of your faces. is it a problem? maybe…
