Shadowing Someone Episode 6 “The Schools Curriculum”

My Sixth week on Vanier is to focus on the school’s curriculum. What do they teach? How they teach it? Hidden curriculum anyone? As far as I know, Vanier does not follow regular school curriculums where you learn math on period one, science period and so on. Instead, Vanier aims to teach disabled students how to “fend for themselves”. Vanier also serves as a “nursing home for disabled children” and uses kindergarten materials. The school’s curriculum offers an alternate route. Students who undergo the program are admitted until their 22 years old. Upon graduation a student is presented with a degree of alternate education. Throughout the years of going to Vanier, students will experience the same daily routines with the exceptions of “swim days” where they get to swim with other schools within the school division. In the morning, they interchange the scheduled between these four classes, Circle time, Liturgy, Feeding, and Cook. I apologize for not having knowledge at the afternoon session because I’m done by noon at Vanier. Vanier curriculum focuses on Faith-based learning and basic communication. As a Catholic school, Vanier is required to integrate Catholicism to the curriculum to ensure its students that faith is not absent in classrooms. Vanier also incorporates basic communication to its curriculum. Why? Most of Vanier’s students are unable to talk. Vanier uses computers, stickers, and cards, and indicators to help the children communicate better. I’ve seen some students frustrated due to their impatience of using the materials necessary of communicating. Also, some students tend to scream out loud every once in a while when what they don’t want. Whenever these students screams and shouts, Vanier implements the same disciplinary action like regular schools. Punishments such as “Time out”, “face the wall” and “In or out” are all implemented at Vanier. I was surprise that disabled kids face the same consequences as regular students. Vanier’s curriculum is not as “strong” compared to regular school divisions but, I personally think that it’s effective and working.  I hope that Jean Vanier would continue to operate for a long time.

Shadowing Someone Episode 3: “The Students of Vanier”

Image Detail

My third week in Jean Vanier is to focus on reflecting on the students of school. The student’s ages ranges from 4-20. They are divided in via age groups and difficulty of care. I.E. 4-6 years old would be classified as the youngest. Like I said in the previous logs, the students in Jean Vanier are not considered “normal” by our society. These students have learning disabilities, deformities, mental diseases, and autism which make them unable to meet regular school division expectations. Instead, despite their learning disabilities, they are still taught with lessons with minimal difficulty as much as possible such as simple storytelling, arts and crafts, and simple cooking.  The student interact with the use of pictures depicting what they need like food, toothpaste, and drinks. Most of the students lack the ability to speak and utter words. Some of the students lack patience when trying to communicate like one student that was assigned to me name “Caitlyn”. She can’t walk properly, doesn’t speak, and screams when her patience runs out. I had to act accordingly based on what I have been debrief by the supervisor; to handle everything with care, and to adjust to every situation given. Students in Vanier are given tasks and assigned to one teacher. Their main task is to behave and take consideration of their other classmates because some of them lack the skills to communicate properly and they all end up shouting and sometimes fighting in class. For me, the learners in Jean Vanier as the teachers themselves. Every day, they learn to adjust to their student’s behaviour due to the unstable minds that they have regarding their respective conditions. Also, it is also to take note that the teachers rotate their assigned students and learn to handle their situations. Students of Vanier play an essential part of the school. Why? They are sent to school by their parents to actually “teach” the teachers of their condition and give them a different perspective of life that can use to improve themselves as educators.

Shadowing Someone Episode 2: “The Teachers”

For me my second week at Vanier was more interesting than my first week. This week, I got to work with teachers on room AE-8. Room AE-8 is a room for students ranging from 5-10 years old. The teacher ages where ranging from 23-50(assuming), and all of them are well-trained and well organized in what they do. As a school for special needs, Vanier functions more like a nursing home for students so some of them have medical experience and not considered teachers. However, ¾ of the staff at Vanier have education degrees and also have medical experience ranging from basic to advance semi-nursing aide experience. The teachers functions as “guide by the side” due to most students’ disabilities that prevents them from learning and functioning as “students”. Vanier’s teacher’s adjust and re-evaluates the situation to cope up with the challenges that their students have to improve their service to the students. The Life of a teacher in Vanier is more like a nurse or a caring mother. The hidden curriculum in the Vanier is Altruism. The hidden curriculum of the school was something that I notice when I started getting my hands on the field of their work as teacher/nursing-aides. I personally think that they were not directly instructed to care, and what I sensed in those teachers were warmth, love, and care. It completely threw me out of balance because this was a very life-changing perspective where my “philosophy of education” falls pale in comparison to the resolve that these teachers have. I don’t even see the difference between the teachers and the nursing-aides anymore due to the hidden curriculum. “What are my teachers like in my school?” The role, responsibilities, function, and behaviour of the teacher are completely different because Vanier is not your typical school. Teaching is less implicated in this school because their students’ learning disabilities instead, Teachers focus more on the well being of the students where they are taken care of properly. Furthermore, the teachers use basic teaching such as communication, arts and crafts, cooking, and storytelling which I would say to be very effective due to disabilities of the children.

Learning Project Linker #6: Bashing Through Online….Again? Hours Spent 6 Hours

Image Detail

These days have been very tough on me due the unending homework that I have been having lately. I was like, nope, I’m gonna play Assassin’s Creed and “chilloot” for a while hahaha. What I found out was playing 6 hours straight can actually give strains to your eyes, mind, and body. I’m a gamer and I was always use to be exposed to video games for long period but that was years ago. Why? because Video games have evolve from sparingly awful graphics to high definition 3d game play and the expectations are very very high especially from the hit games such as Call of Duty, God of War, and Final Fantasy. I’m finally putting the hardest challenges that happen to me during the duration of this learning project.

The difficulties that I have experience was my Internet connection. If you’re internet connection sucks, don’t even attempt to play this game online, because lag issues will emerge all over the place and ruin your gameplay. Also, it will disconnect very often due to the technical difficulties that are presents in the game.

Another difficulty, was group isolation. this means that you can’t switch teams once a team of four formed a group. they will own and kill you every time, They will stun you repeated and escape most of your chase sequences, and they will rack up the most point and make you lose.

Lastly, The Final difficulty that I had was the trash talking in the lobbies. I don’t personally talk shit on my the lobbies and games but I shout when I win and what I find humiliating is that a lot of people talk shit at you with your proper consent  and reason. I dislike people who do that and proclaim themselves as bona fide “professional” players when they’re not.

Well, I over did it 27 hours and still counting ’cause I still have to finish the campaign mode and rock at it due to the experience I earned from multiplayer mode but, until then, You just have to wait lol. Peace out! for now that is lol

English 100 Journal #3

After all of these weeks, after all the struggles and the pain that I have suffered from university’s relentless assaults. I, Edgar Allan Dela Cruz will survive my first semester. English 100 is one of the toughest challenges that I have faced ever since challenging the valedictorian of my class to an argument about “knowledge versus money” in which I lost. The question is why did I bring up this story? I never engage without purpose so, this is why. The title of valedictorian is awarded to the person with the highest grade point average. Also, valedictorians are respected and whom most people depend on when it comes to group activities and brain storming. Like the valedictorian, for me, English 100 has demands that I could never possibly meet. Furthermore, it is very structured and has several branches of almost unlimited supply of content. They come in different shapes and sizes. They could go from poems to essays and from paragraphs to journals. Why am I saying this? It is because I envy people who were born with natural talent on academics. These people can easily decipher poems and literary pieces like Robert Francis’ “The Pitcher” in a matter of minutes while it seemed barely understandable to people like me without that natural talent. Why can we just be equal? “Ten thousand hours” says Malcolm Gladwell, a phrase that I have been hearing from various professors at the U of R ever since the beginning of class. I had a similar motto of defeating gene via perseverance. However, I started to doubt my motto when I pushed myself to my limits and realized that I was not even close to the level and grandeur of that valedictorian. Overwhelming would be the proper word to describe this phenomenon as well as this English 100 class wouldn’t it?  I am weary of the journey of life. I am baffled, confused, and alone in the land of uncharted snow. Does hope and altruism exist? If so, who has it? Why it is only bestowed to the hands of famous, intelligent, and the undeserving? Though my futile attempts to survive this course devour my strength and distort my well-being, I do not plan on giving up. Listen: Being sick does not help either. However, for reasons unknown, my cognitively is not is not the same as before. I do not why this cognitive deterioration is happening to me. I made a gamble and placed my credibility on the line. (My head hurts). It’s not over yet English 100. I will put the last bit of my strength into passing this class before God knows what happens. English 100, you are tough to finish, and seemingly impossible to finish especially to a schmuck like but, let me tell you this: I will not letting you succeed into dragging me into the abyss.

Bonus Content:

Dear Professor,

That was some rant that I made and I apologize. However I think it had to be done and I feel a lot better know. Being sick distorts my thinking and reason. Since we are on the topic of poems, I decided to share one of mine for non-academic reason and some feedback I guess.

Sincerely Yours

Edgar Allan Dela Cruz

The Moon

Soundless, lifeless, and heartless

Consumed by darkness, a land of no caress.

Desolated with lies, devoured by Melancholy

Visited by observers, a vessel full of folly

Windless, depressing, clueless

Populated by craters, all faceless.

A place of overwhelming drought

A realm of unforgiving doubt

Beauty as it may from far away

A demented version of the milky way

Supressing day and offering night

The phenomena of an eclipse, the dark light

The Moon, the parsimonious moon

The pretentious shade, a silent typhoon

Assasssin’s Creed: Revelations has received generally favorable reviews, with a score of 81% and 80% on Metacritic for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 respectively.Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced during an earnings call on November 8, 2011, that pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed: Revelations were “significantly higher” than figures for Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, yet the firm is still expecting a “double digit decline” in sales for Revelations compared to the other title.

IGN gave the game a rating of 8.5 out of 10, stating “This is the best Assassin’s Creed yet, even if that victory is claimed by an inch and not a mile. If you’ve been following the lives of Altair and Ezio this long, you owe it to yourself to see their last adventure.” 1UP gave the game a rating of B+, stating “While Revelationslacks that one supreme improvement or standout mechanic that defined AC2 and Brotherhood each, it’s still a damn fine sendoff for Altair and Ezio.”

Edge gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, saying that “unlike the elegant lead, who’s grey-haired but unbowed by the end of the adventure, Assassin’s Creed has been quietly compromised by age.” Eurogamer also gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, writing “where Brotherhood enhanced the thrill of being Ezio Auditore,Revelations distracts from it. Ezio may look old, but it’s the series itself that really shows its age.”

VideoGamer gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, stating “So, for the first time, a new Assassin’s Creed game is worse than its predecessor, the first time the short development period has had a noticeable impact on the game’s quality. It’s a game of nearlies and might-have-beens: summed up by the hookblade, a supposedly key new feature which in practice merely extends Ezio’s reach slightly, and allows him to glide down the occasional zipline.” GamePro also gave the game a rating of 7 out of 10, saying that “at its core, this is the Assassin’s Creed we’ve grown to love in recent years, and it still serves as a pretty good time sink — plus, it’s a necessary bridge to next year’s already-announced follow-up. But obligation shouldn’t be the primary reason to play something, and sadly, that’s too often the case in this humdrum campaign.”

Game Informer gave the game a rating of 8.8 out of 10, writing “a number of new features have been attempted to make Revelations feel new and different from its predecessors. In that quest for broader variety and a unique identity from the earlier games, Revelations makes some missteps that are hard to ignore. However, the game offers more of what has been great about the franchise, and that should be enough to bring most fans to the table, even if it a poor starting point for new players.”GameTrailers also gave the game a rating of 8.8 out of 10, writing that “the engine is a bit long in the tooth and some of the content isn’t entirely worth exploring, but if you’re looking for an unforgettable top shelf action/adventure, heed the creed.”

Official Xbox Magazine gave the game a rating of 8.5 out of 10, stating “What’s available here remains as ridiculously appealing as ever. It’s still a thrill unique to the series to be perched six stories high, looking out across miles of meticulously rendered game world – even if that dazzling, danger-filled world has grown overly familiar, having traded what was once revolution for iterative evolution.” PlayStation Official Magazine (UK) gave the game a rating of 9 out of 10, stating “As a conclusion for Ezio’s chapter, Revelations proves an utterly brilliant swansong.”

If you’re a fan of the game, You will probably love this game. If not, don’t even bother buying it.

But enough of that. I just gave you some hints and winks on Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

Time for the real Fish!

I wrote this email 4 days ago. 1 day after the release of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and 1 day after the Game Stop employees told me that they “ran out” of the Ultimate Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations which was reserved to me.

To whom it may concern,
I moved my pre-order from the Assassin’s Creed Revelations Signature Edition to the Assassin’s Creed Revelations Ultimate Edition for 79.99 at the northgate mall in Regina on October 19 1:50 pm to an employee namely Travis almost 13 hours after Arkham City’s midnight launch and when the employees of GameStop at Rochdale Regina found out of the Assassins Creed Revelations Ultimate Edition on their system. November 15, 2011, the day that Assassin’s Creed Revelations was released, I went to Northgate mall to pick it up but, They told me that they ”ran out” of the Ultimate edition and there was an ”error” that was made by the employee who moved it in the first place. They offered me the regular edition but I refused to accept because I have been waiting for this game a long time. They told me to move the money to some other game and I had no choice but to move it because they said no when I wanted to move the money to an Eb games card. I would would like to request a solution to this problem.

To double check, I called the Gamestop hotline and explained the situation to them. They told me that the District Manager will call me in a matter of 1-3 Business Days to rectify the situation. Its’ already been 3 days and not phone calls nor texts. I am starting to put my doubts on this Fiasco that has been deliberately wasting my time. I don’t want to be unfair but an error is not an excuse that will suffice this problem. 12:07 am Novermber 20, 2011. I humbly wait for this problem to be solve. Well 80 bucks and its very hard to get refunds especially if you traded games to them.  I actually doubt that I would even get my Ultimate Edition and start playing and catching with the Professional League. Oh well. However, These employees can be greedy sometimes and deny your claims and lie in front of your faces. is it a problem? maybe…

Learning Project Linker #3: The Story mode: Sequence 1 – Hours Spent: 5hrs

Well I got a bit of consumed of the multiplayer lately and decided to visit and learn about the story mode.

Well let’s begin with the 2 part opening sequence:

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood‘s story mode picks up right away after the ending of Assassin’s Creed 2, where a a secret has been divulge to Ezio Auditore da Firenze. He now escapes Il Vaticano or The Vatican and heads home to Monterriggioni

First Impression: This game if whacked out. It’s crazy and all it needs is a mythical beasts and flying pigs to be complete.

well who is Desmond Miles?

Desmond Miles was born in an Assassin “hideout” in the United States, which was known as “the Farm“, an off-the-grid compound with a population of about thirty people. Though he was destined to be trained as an Assassin, he was frustrated by his parents’ explicit instructions not to leave the compound, and believed them to be overly concerned and paranoid. On his sixteenth birthday, he finally fled, wanting “to see the rest of the world.” He had no regrets over leaving his parents since, as far as he was concerned, they were little more than his wardens, with the farm as his prison.

After leaving the Assassin compound, Desmond went into hiding for nine years. While keeping a low profile, he eventually became a bartender. Wanting to avoid the Assassins, Desmond never used his real name, and used only cash to purchase items. However, he was eventually found, traced through a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license, and was kidnapped by the Templars, who brought him to an Abstergo laboratory in Italy.

Desmond was used by Abstergo as a Catalyst to look for “Pieces of Eden” via Animus. She was rescued by Lucy Stillman, and  told Desmond that they wanted him to be trained as an Assassin, which could be achieved in a matter of days, thanks to the Bleeding effect. Doing so required him to learn through the ancestor that he had synchronized with Subject 16, Ezio Auditore. Desmond agreed to help almost immediately, which surprised Lucy. He was then quickly plugged into the Animus 2.0, and began reliving Ezio’s memories.

As he climbed out of the Animus, Lucy tossed Desmond a hidden blade with the Assassin insignia on the bracer, and asked for his assistance in covering their escape. Making their way into the warehouse, they were confronted by Warren and several Abstergo security guards, all of whom were intent on reclaiming Desmond.

The two eliminated all of the Templars that assaulted them, with Desmond – now fully synchronized with Ezio and possessing all of his abilities – masterfully using his hidden blade to kill many of the guards himself. With his entourage defeated, Warren was left to confront Desmond on his own; though he opted instead to retreat, promising that their victory was only temporary.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze (1459 – 1524) was a Florentine noble during the Italian Renaissance and, unbeknownst to most historians and philosophers, Mentor of the Assassin Order in Italy. He was an ancestor to both Desmond Miles and Subject 16.

Ezio remained unaware of his Assassin heritage until the age of 17, when his father and two brothers, Federico and Petruccio, were murdered before his eyes. Forced to flee his birthplace with his remaining family, Ezio took refuge in the Tuscan town ofMonteriggioni, at the Villa Auditore. Learning of his heritage from his uncle, Mario Auditore, Ezio began his Assassin training and his quest for vengeance against the Grand Master of the Templar OrderRodrigo Borgia, who had ordered the execution of his father and two brothers.

During his quest, Ezio managed to not only unite the pages of Altaïr’s Codex for the first time since Domenico Auditore but also to save the cities of Florence, Venice, and Rome from theTemplars‘ control. He ensured the future travels of Christoffa Corombo to the “New World,” liberated Rome from Borgia control, and prevented the rise to power of Ercole Massimo‘s Cult of Hermes, helping spread the Renaissance and Assassin ideals of independence and free thought throughout Italy.

The House of Borgia, or Borja, was a SpanishItalian noble family that became prominent during the Renaissance. Notable members of the family include RodrigoCesare and Lucrezia Borgia. The family is known today for their crimes, such as theft, murder, incest and simony. During the Renaissance, the Borgia family was the most prominent embodiment of the Templars and also the Order’s leaders. In 1492 with election of Rodrigo Borgia to Pope, the family became the ruling body of the Papal state. The city of Rome declined into corruption, theft, murder and oppression.

Ezio Auditore became a prominent resistance against the Borgia in the early 16th century, and recruited citizens to the Assassinscause. As the power of the Borgias declined and disarrayed, the city of Rome experienced a change, the benefits of art and culture finally arrived and its people discovered the prosperity of the Renaissance. In 1503 with the murder of Rodrigo Borgia, courtesy of his son, Cesare, the Borgia family took an instant downfall, with Cesare, the Captain General of the Papal armies, arrested and exiled to Spain in 1504. The family lost all of it’s influence upon the death of Rodrigo after Pius III and later Julius IIsucceeded him as Pope.

Sequence 1:

The continuing story is set in 2012. After escaping the Templars‘ attack at the end of Assassin’s Creed IIDesmond MilesLucy Stillman, Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings flee to Monteriggioni, establishing a new hideout in the ruins of the Villa Auditore. After restoring the electricity in the old tunnels under the villa, the player once again takes control of Ezio Auditore through the genetic memory of Desmond Miles using the Animus 2.0 (which is the game’s memory interface). Their mission is to find the Apple of Eden, an important and mysterious artifact that could prevent the impending disaster that is coming in that same year, believed to be perpetrated by the Templars.

Ezio’s story continues in 1499, where he exits the Vault, confused by what he saw inside. He escapes Rome with his uncle Mario Auditore and arrives at Monteriggioni. Once home, Ezio is comforted by the prospect that his personal vendetta is over and that his days as an Assassin are done; however, Niccolò Machiavelli challenges Ezio’s decision to leave Rodrigo Borgia, now Pope Alexander VI, alive. The following morning, Monteriggioni is besieged by Cesare Borgia, son of Rodrigo. Mario is killed at the hands of Cesare himself, and the Apple lost to Cesare and the Templars. Ezio escapes with his family and travels to Rome, the center of the Templar Order in Italy, once again seeking vengeance against the Borgias. There, he discovers that the Assassins are failing in the fight against corruption. Determined to redeem the Guild, Ezio convinces Machiavelli that he has what it takes to lead while assembling a Brotherhood powerful enough to destroy the Templars and his new arch-nemesis, Cesare Borgia.
