My Final Week at Vanier is to look back and reflect in this journey of interning. What really stood out? What experience was really memorable? I was also instructed to focus on the power of influence in the school. In this journey, there are two most powerful influences on Jean Vanier: Faith & Caring. Although most students lack the understanding, Vanier integrates Faith in the curriculum. Mandatory or not, Christian or not, Vanier integrates faith in everyday activities in cooking, arts and crafts, singing, storytelling. I know that its mandatory but, how Vanier does it; Integrates faith with TLC or Tender loving care makes it something very unique. I’m a Christian and being in Vanier, I see Altruistic actions and professionalism found on Biblical allegories, parables, and chapters. I was stunned that such a magnificent edifice is here on the city of the queen (Regina). Throughout my life I was searching for a place to belong. A cartoon character named Jiraiya once said; “They say wherever someone is still thinking of you, that place is your home”. Why did I mention this statement? I mentioned it because this is what Vanier is it’s not just an institution to teach disabled, it is a home open for everyone who seeks one. There were a lot of memorable events such as screaming and feeding a disabled kid and see’s her happy with her every bite ‘because she can’t hold it on her own is something that really touched my heart. I want to help them and if possible, cure of them of their abnormality that’s plaguing the world as we know it. If only there was a cure……. Seeing these students in Vanier made me realize that I need to be more aware of my surroundings and the people around me. There are a lot of disabilities that hinders our current society from evolving to the next stage of improvement. Some of the disabilities are present in the students of Vanier such as down syndrome, muteness, autism, mental diseases, and retardation. But what does Vanier do that has an impact with these students? CARING. I was surprise to see people actually concern about their students. Quite frankly, a lot of teachers don’t even care if their students pass or fail. Some of them wanted a quick escape from hard labour and went to education and pretentiously teach. It makes my bile go inside-out when I see such people who choose the “easy way” and not fulfill their duties and responsibilities. Being in Vanier was a complete breath of fresh air. I am truly devastated on how society treats people with disabilities, and how there is such a huge inequality in this planet. I only live once. With all the knowledge that I have so far and having 20 years worth of experience as a human being, I will do my best to end at least one world problem whether its global illiteracy, hunger, poverty, or even “the ignorance of people” that’s preventing us to be unified. If these are even possible of achieving, I will do my best to achieve them.
Schoolwork is important for teenagers. Understanding the subjects that is taught in middle school and high school set the stage for the rest of a teenager’s life. The ability to learn and process new information is a huge key towards teenage success. By the time kids reach their teenage years, their learning styles have already been realized. Children begin developing their learning styles when they first enter the world and complete this part of development usually by the age of twelve. It is important to understand that people have different learning styles, parental influences, peers, and mentors that affect their learning.
First, Different learning styles and curves. Ever wonder why teens seem to put off the easier material until last minute? Or why there must be complete silence for him or her to study effectively? Both of these are largely due to the teen’s learning style. The way that a teen learns has a big impact on his or her study habits. You might notice that teens learn better under pressure so he or she puts off studying until the day before the test. Teens whose learning styles are at their best when there are no distractions will need complete silence when they are trying to study. When teens are not in the situation that best fits their learning style, they will have trouble with their study habits as well. There are four different learning styles that affect a teenager’s study habits, these are visual, auditory, actual learning, and analytic. Visual learners. There are those teens that are visual learners. These teens work best with visual representation of the information. This includes pictures, symbols, charts, diagrams, and colors. Auditory learners. These teens learn best if they hear the information. When auditory-learning teens study, you might find them reading aloud because it helps them to better learn the material when they hear themselves read it aloud. Actual learners . When it comes to practical subjects like Math and English, these teens would rather do some trial and error rather than actually read and learn the rules first. Although, it might sound contrary to what most parents think their kinds should do, it is not good to try to change your child’s learning style. Instead, find ways that you can help develop his study habits through this trial and error kind of learning style. Analytic learners .These kinds of learners deal well with details. You might notice your teen reading and rereading the information, while taking some time to reflect on what was just read in the meantime. An analytic learner deals well with lists, patterns, homework, and practice exercises. Since this kind of teen deals well with goals, set some steps and study goals for your teen to aid in his study habits.
Second, Parental influences. Parents are a huge influence in regards to teenage learning but, Teenagers don’t learn much from parental warnings and lecturing. Most parents have tried that without much success. And unfortunately, one or both parents all too often cave in when their children get in trouble. Each time parents do so, a valuable lesson isn’t learned and a mistake is apt to be repeated. Also, Teens that were implied with tremendous amounts of discipline by theirs show more promise than most teens.
Third, Peer pressure. Peer pressure is one thing that all teens have in common. You can’t escape it. It is everywhere. Whether it is pressure to conform to a group norm or pressure to act, peer pressure is something everybody has to deal with at some time in his or her life.
Children, especially during adolescence, begin to spend a lot more time with their friends, and less time with their family. This makes them more susceptible to the influences of their peers. It is important to remember that teenage friends can have a positive influence; we should therefore find friends that have similar interests and views as those you are trying to develop in your children, including doing well in school, having respect for others and avoiding drug use, smoking and drinking, etc.
Peer pressure isn’t always negative. Peers may pressure others into negative behaviors or away from positive behaviors, but can push in positive directions as well. Not all teens react to peer pressure in the same way. Gender and age are factors. For example, boys are more susceptible than girls to peer pressure, particularly in risk situations. Younger teens are more easily influenced than older teens, with peer pressure peaking in about eighth or ninth grade. Individual characteristics such as confidence level, personality and degree of maturity make a difference. Peer pressure varies according to the situation: being with one close friend, in the small clique of friends, or seeing what the larger peer group is doing in school.
Finally, Teacher’s influence. Teachers play a significant role in teenage learning. Since teachers can affect how students perceive the course materials, it has been found that teachers who showed enthusiasm towards the course materials and students can affect a positive learning experience towards the course materials. On teacher/course evaluations, it was found that teachers who have a positive disposition towards the course content tend to transfer their passion to receptive students. Students are likely to build stronger relations with teachers who are friendly and supportive and will show more interest in courses taught by these teachers. Teachers that spend more time interacting and working directly with students are perceived as supportive and effective teachers. Effective teachers have been shown to invite student participation and decision making, allow humor into their classroom, and demonstrate a willingness to play.
My third week in Jean Vanier is to focus on reflecting on the students of school. The student’s ages ranges from 4-20. They are divided in via age groups and difficulty of care. I.E. 4-6 years old would be classified as the youngest. Like I said in the previous logs, the students in Jean Vanier are not considered “normal” by our society. These students have learning disabilities, deformities, mental diseases, and autism which make them unable to meet regular school division expectations. Instead, despite their learning disabilities, they are still taught with lessons with minimal difficulty as much as possible such as simple storytelling, arts and crafts, and simple cooking. The student interact with the use of pictures depicting what they need like food, toothpaste, and drinks. Most of the students lack the ability to speak and utter words. Some of the students lack patience when trying to communicate like one student that was assigned to me name “Caitlyn”. She can’t walk properly, doesn’t speak, and screams when her patience runs out. I had to act accordingly based on what I have been debrief by the supervisor; to handle everything with care, and to adjust to every situation given. Students in Vanier are given tasks and assigned to one teacher. Their main task is to behave and take consideration of their other classmates because some of them lack the skills to communicate properly and they all end up shouting and sometimes fighting in class. For me, the learners in Jean Vanier as the teachers themselves. Every day, they learn to adjust to their student’s behaviour due to the unstable minds that they have regarding their respective conditions. Also, it is also to take note that the teachers rotate their assigned students and learn to handle their situations. Students of Vanier play an essential part of the school. Why? They are sent to school by their parents to actually “teach” the teachers of their condition and give them a different perspective of life that can use to improve themselves as educators.
For me my second week at Vanier was more interesting than my first week. This week, I got to work with teachers on room AE-8. Room AE-8 is a room for students ranging from 5-10 years old. The teacher ages where ranging from 23-50(assuming), and all of them are well-trained and well organized in what they do. As a school for special needs, Vanier functions more like a nursing home for students so some of them have medical experience and not considered teachers. However, ¾ of the staff at Vanier have education degrees and also have medical experience ranging from basic to advance semi-nursing aide experience. The teachers functions as “guide by the side” due to most students’ disabilities that prevents them from learning and functioning as “students”. Vanier’s teacher’s adjust and re-evaluates the situation to cope up with the challenges that their students have to improve their service to the students. The Life of a teacher in Vanier is more like a nurse or a caring mother. The hidden curriculum in the Vanier is Altruism. The hidden curriculum of the school was something that I notice when I started getting my hands on the field of their work as teacher/nursing-aides. I personally think that they were not directly instructed to care, and what I sensed in those teachers were warmth, love, and care. It completely threw me out of balance because this was a very life-changing perspective where my “philosophy of education” falls pale in comparison to the resolve that these teachers have. I don’t even see the difference between the teachers and the nursing-aides anymore due to the hidden curriculum. “What are my teachers like in my school?” The role, responsibilities, function, and behaviour of the teacher are completely different because Vanier is not your typical school. Teaching is less implicated in this school because their students’ learning disabilities instead, Teachers focus more on the well being of the students where they are taken care of properly. Furthermore, the teachers use basic teaching such as communication, arts and crafts, cooking, and storytelling which I would say to be very effective due to disabilities of the children.
My First week of field experience in Jean Vanier was something that I was not expecting. Jean Vanier is a school for students with special needs-meaning these having serious disabilities such as Down syndrome, inability to walk, psychotic abilities and autism. The school does not follow a regular high school, pre-school, elementary, and middle years. Instead, they accept students from ages 3 to 21, where a student is assigned in a specific room corresponding to their age and difficulty of care. Furthermore, the teacher lounge has pictures of every student with a list of possible seizures and protocols in case of seizures. I came in to Vanier (on time of course) and looked for the Arkin Kauf, my supervisor. He debrief me about Vanier and I found that he didn’t wanted a job like this in Vanier but, aspires to be a elementary school teacher. I guess we really have no control of our lives. Then, I was introduced on the rest of the staff and the principal as well. They told me that this endeavour would be different compared to interning to other school divisions. Vanier is a Catholic school with a strong roster of Catholic teachers, and incorporates with faith based activities like praying, singing, and more. The then introduced me to the students. I have never seen something like it before. Most them can’t speak and walk. Furthermore there level of cognitively is very low which limiting their functions to just showing up in class. I started to think and I was like – seeing these kids “make all your worries seem pathetic”. because these kids will roam this planet for the rest of their lives as unable and illiterate. I think this was strong sign for me to broaden my horizon and explore the “other side of the coin” or special education. The first week was purely introduction to everything so there was not a lot activity to do because the supervisor is doing preparation that day for his classes, and I was limited to basic helping such as feeding the kids who are unable to use their hands and cleaning the children’s messes. The physical and human context in which the school operates is Faith. Vanier is a Catholic and draws most of its sources from faith-based materials like the Bible, liturgies’ of the church, and the sacraments of the Catholic Church.
These days have been very tough on me due the unending homework that I have been having lately. I was like, nope, I’m gonna play Assassin’s Creed and “chilloot” for a while hahaha. What I found out was playing 6 hours straight can actually give strains to your eyes, mind, and body. I’m a gamer and I was always use to be exposed to video games for long period but that was years ago. Why? because Video games have evolve from sparingly awful graphics to high definition 3d game play and the expectations are very very high especially from the hit games such as Call of Duty, God of War, and Final Fantasy. I’m finally putting the hardest challenges that happen to me during the duration of this learning project.
The difficulties that I have experience was my Internet connection. If you’re internet connection sucks, don’t even attempt to play this game online, because lag issues will emerge all over the place and ruin your gameplay. Also, it will disconnect very often due to the technical difficulties that are presents in the game.
Another difficulty, was group isolation. this means that you can’t switch teams once a team of four formed a group. they will own and kill you every time, They will stun you repeated and escape most of your chase sequences, and they will rack up the most point and make you lose.
Lastly, The Final difficulty that I had was the trash talking in the lobbies. I don’t personally talk shit on my the lobbies and games but I shout when I win and what I find humiliating is that a lot of people talk shit at you with your proper consent and reason. I dislike people who do that and proclaim themselves as bona fide “professional” players when they’re not.
Well, I over did it 27 hours and still counting ’cause I still have to finish the campaign mode and rock at it due to the experience I earned from multiplayer mode but, until then, You just have to wait lol. Peace out! for now that is lol

Work experience 30 is like the high school version of the Field Experience on the ECS 100 class. I was placed on O.M. Irwin, and it was a very life-changing experience.
My name is Edgar Allan Dela Cruz and this is my report on work experience. I was placed on O.M Irwin middle school. Irwin is a public school under the Chinook school division whose goal is to give quality education to its students. Furthermore, the school aims to improve standards of education that will have a substantial impact to its students. This is my Final Assessment.
I chose this placement because of three things. First, my inability to drive prevented from having multiple workplaces which was also a benefit for me in the sense that I am not required to travel such distances to reach my workplace. Second, the moment that I realized that I was handling twelve and thirteen year-olds, I did not hesitate of choosing Irwin as a workplace. After seeing the student’s situations (Different learning curves, Immaturity, and lack of discipline), I contemplated and realized that I went through the same situation, but nobody corrected me and taught me proper etiquette. Then, I said to myself, now that I have opportunity, I shall seize the moment to rectify the wrongs that has been tormenting my soul for all life. To inspire, to motivate, to rectify – three words that wanted to burst out of my heart when I chose Irwin as a workplace. Third, I chose Irwin because I wanted to be a teacher. A teacher is a person who provides schooling for pupils and students. The role of teacher is often formal and ongoing, carried out by way of occupation or profession at a school or other place of formal education. However, I wanted to be teacher because I want to pass on the legacy of my former mentors to my future students. I want to tear down every barrier that hinders a student from learning. I believe that every student deserves the best that their respective teachers can offer. Also, I was fortunate enough to get a hold of the best teachers in the province right here in Swift Current, and my goal is reimburse my future students with all the wisdom and knowledge that I inherited from these magnificent edifices that is teachers that continuously respect and honor.
Irwin did not only meet my expectations, it’s exceeded them. Due to the rotation of classes every day, it gave a variety of activities and responsibilities that made my work experience such a memorable event in my life. I had different task everyday which ranges from tutoring math, to teaching individuals drama skills. Every day was a challenge that needs to be overcome, and I fought valiantly day by day to succeed and prevail. My expectations were excruciatingly high, but what I achieved was something more than I could have expected: Bonds! Bonds of everyone in Irwin including myself that will be treasured in the deepest fathoms of my soul for all eternity.
Throughout the duration of this course, I have learned a lot of skills from my Work Experience teacher, Mr. Biem. Mr. Biem has taught me the fundamentals and proper etiquette of being a teacher. His lessons ranged from Professionalism to Confidentiality. Furthermore, as I was learning under him, I learned that he has his own style of teaching and a different style of implanting discipline to his classes. I think that I am willing to take a different direction from what I have observed. That was also something that I learned, “Take another route”.
The program has helped me significantly. It gave me an idea of my career choice of being a teacher. Furthermore, it showed me a new perspective in life or should I rephrase as “You’re not in school anymore”. This program has led to my final decision of being a teacher in the near future. I will do my best to deliver “Whatever it takes”.
